We have developed a comprehensive Great American Packing Guide to make your packing process
run smoothly.
Boxes:
- Label all boxes clearly and develop a simple system that allows your movers to know which box belongs in which room
- Do not mix delicate items with non-delicate items.
- Try to use boxes specifically designed for moving, rather than finding makeshift boxes
- Do not separate items that belong together. It can be a painful process trying to locate screws and other small parts
Delicates:
- Wrap delicate items such as china and glassware in clean paper. Use newspaper only for extra padding as the ink can ruin the items.
- After you have packed your delicates in a sturdy box, any empty spaces should be filled with extra paper to prevent items from moving around
- Make sure you label the boxes DELICATE or GLASS so movers will take extra care with them
Major Appliances:
- Washing Machine - stuff towels inside the tub to prevent it from rotating during the move
- Freezer/Refrigerator - defrost and dry the interior, make sure the refrigerator stands upright for 24 hours before plugging it in
Large items:
- Cover edges (such as table corners) with a rag and a rubber band. This will prevent them from damaging other items during the move
- Keep heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top
Radios, computers and Tvs:
- These items should be boxed upright and padded on every side
- Extra bubble wrap should be applied to tv screens and computer monitors
- Wind electrical cords, fastening them so they do not dangle
Bedding and Clothes:
- These travel best in wardrobe boxes or suitcases
Dressers, Cabinets and Drawers
- Secure all drawers with blankets and padding before tying them with rope (tape can ruin the finish)
- Do not overload the drawers with heavy items
